USB Technology and Flash Memory Jump Drives

USB Technology and Flash memory Jump Drives

USB flash drives are flash memory data storage devices integrated with a universal serial bus (USB) connector. They are small, lightweight, rewritable and removable.

USB flash drives offer great advantages over other portable storage devices, such as the floppy disk, which is currently excluded from newly manufactured CPUs. USB ports, however, appear on every PC and laptop. The USB flash drives, such as Lexar 2GB Jump Drive Mercury USB Flash Drive, available from Midwest Merchandise at http://www.midwest-merchandise.com, are more compact, faster, hold more data, and are more reliable being void of moving parts, and have a more sturdy and durable design. These types of drives use the USB mass storage standard, and are supported by modern operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and other Unix-like systems. Without being mechanically driven, the name seems inappropriate. However, it is referred to as a "drive" because it accessed by the computer operating system (and the user) in a manner identical to a mechanical disk drive.

A flash drive is a small printed circuit board typically housed in a plastic, metal or rubber casing to increase their durability. This makes the drive small and sturdy enough to be carried about in a pocket or purse.

The typical USB device may include:

·        Jumpers and test pins — for testing during the flash drive's manufacturing or loading code into the microprocessor.

·        LEDs — indicate data transfers or data reads and writes.

·        Write-protect switches — indicate whether the device should be in "write-protection" mode.

·        Unpopulated space — provides space to include a second memory chip. Having this second space allows the manufacturer to develop only one printed circuit board that can be used for more than one storage size device, to meet the needs of the market.

·        USB connector cover or cap — reduces the risk of damage due to static electricity, and improves overall device appearance. Some flash drives do not feature a cap, but instead have retractable USB connectors. Some flash drives have a swivel cap that is permanently connected to the drive itself and eliminates the chance of losing the cap.

·        Transport aid —the cap or the main body contains a hole suitable for connection to a key chain or lanyard or to otherwise aid transport and storage of the USB flash device.

To access the data stored in a flash drive, the drive must be connected to a USB port, (the drive protrudes from the port, so caution should be used when using a notebook or laptop USB port. Flash drives are active only when plugged into a USB connection and draw all necessary power from the supply provided by that connection. Some flash drives, especially high-speed drives, may require more power than the limited amount provided by a bus-powered USB hub, such as those built into some computer keyboards or monitors. These drives will not work unless plugged directly into a host controller (i.e., the ports found on the computer itself) or a self-powered hub.

Mp3 players use USB connecters and ports for uploading and playing back music, video and storing photos.

Other options for higher price Manufacture ink cartridges

Remanufactured Black Ink Cartridges
Most consumers are confused by and frustrated with the fact that ink cartridges are so high in price when printer prices are currently very low. Inexpensive printers are widely available for about the same cost as purchasing a name-brand black and color ink-jet cartridges, though most new printers come with cartridges that only hold a small amount of ink. Many consumers are rightfully appalled at the outrageous prices for Ink-jet and toner cartridges, and many are not satisfied with non-manufacturer re-fill kit options, even though they seem to be easier on the budget. The fact that self-fill kits are oftentimes messy and don’t always work, makes them anything but economically favored.
Dataproducts Remanufactured ink cartridges help to keep replacement ink prices lower than what is available through major printer vendors. The major retailers, including Canon, Epson, Hewlett-Packard, and Lexmark, are frustrated by the existence of independent manufacturers of alternative inks. Some of the vendors are suing third-party makers of cartridge clones for so-called blantant patent violations. This tends to leave consumers at a technological fork in the road, where they must decide to either purchase name-brand ink for a hefty price, or risk substandard printouts and malfunctions by buying replacement ink jet cartridges from a generic ink distributor. As PC World has found, however, plenty of worthy third-party replacement ink jets are also available, such as, Dataproducts Remanufactured Black Ink Cartridges for all-in-one HP printers. They are readily available from Midwest Merchandise online at: http://www.midwest-merchandise.com/. Cartridges for other printer models are also available.

Hewlett Packard’s general manager, Pradeep Jotwani, stated that their cartridge prices aren't high-priced when considering the cost of researching, then developing the technology and ultimately manufacturing the product. He further stated, "These aren't just bottles of ink you put inside of your printer.” He explained that HP's ink jet cartridges are very sophisticated, as each one has 40 microscopic nozzles that precisely expel billions of ink dots across a single page. HP is also fastidiously attentive to ink quality, Jotwani says, to assure uniform viscosity and color. This argument may hold true for other major printer manufacturers, however, consumers desire vendors to research less expensive options for developing and manufacturing to meet their customer’s printing needs. Buyers can’t help but wonder if any further research is being done to curtail cost that is being passed onto the consumer. Printing is a necessity in both the corporate and private sectors, and the consumer is stuck paying a price they don’t want to pay for cartridges, when no alternatives are available. The only option, at this point, is competing companies who chose to produce a good quality product at a lower market price. If HP, Lexmark, Epson and all the others want consumers to keep buying their ink, they have to do more than be frustrated by independent distributors. Companies like Dataproducts provide economical, quality black ink cartridges, such as their Remanufactured Black Ink Cartridges for Hewlett-Packard, because they are able to provide what consumers want to buy, even though other companies claim they can’t get the price any lower.

Light Scribe Technology

LightScribe Labeling Software and Capatible Discs

There is now an easy, neat and efficient way to label CD and DVD disks without the hassle of purchasing paper labels, using printer ink or having to grab a permanent ink marker, before you forget the disk content. The same laser used to burn the data to the disk is used to make the label for the reverse side of the disk. It can be used with either a desktop PC or notebook computer since it’s not tethered to standard printer. LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology is a stand-alone printer/disk drive and being compact, it’s very portable.

LightScribe, a registered trademark of Hewlett Packard, and is the first optical disc recording technology that utilizes specially-coated recordable CD and DVD media. The useful system produces laser-etched labels text or graphics, instead of the traditional stick-on labels and printable discs. To take advantage of LightScribe technology, a LightScribe-enabled disc drive, LightScribe-enabled discs, and supporting software is required. An economical 100-pack of Aleratec LightScribe capatible DVD disks is available from Midwest Merchandise at: http://www.midwest-merchandise.com.

Personal digital photos or images may be used by saving artwork in a bitmap, TIFF or JPEG format. However, LightScribe-enabled software comes with a variety of backgrounds. Available background types are: Title, Content, and Full, which refer to how much radial space the label will cover. You can also choose circular or straight text, though using curved text will cut down on burn time. Inverting colors or making a "negative" of an image can make for a dramatic effect when burning a LightScribe label. The more detailed the graphic is, the longer it takes for the drive to burn the label.

After burning data to the read-side of the disc, the user simply turns the medium over and inserts it with the label side down. The disk drive's laser etches into the label side in such a way that a high-quality image is produced.

Currently, it's impossible to rewrite a LightScribe label, but it's possible to add more content to a label that has already been burned. LightScribe will not burn a laser image onto non-LightScribe capable discs.

LightScribe is compatible with PCs using Windows 2000 and XP. To use LightScribe with a Mac, you'll need Mac OS X 10.3, a LaCie DVD-RW external double layer drive and a DVD-RW internal drive.

LightScribe disk drives and recordable discs are used by up- and-coming music artists wanting to showcase promotional CDs. For any individual or company desiring to put forth professional, high-quality collateral, Aleratec CD-R 100-Pack for LightScribe Direct Disk Labeling DVD, is an economically necessity for use with the LightScribe system.
The bottom line:

No purchase of disc label sheets necessary.
No need to insert and remove the label sheets in/out of your printer.
No need to remember which side of the label sheet is supposed to be laid in the printer tray.
No need to un-jam CD-label sheets stuck in the printer rollers.

Soon, HP may very well incorporate LightScribe technology in every newly manufactured CPUs.

All about Hand Held Scanners

Hand-held scanners
Scanners were made popular and were widely available during the1970s with the introduction of the CB radio, used mostly by over-the- road drivers. At that time, scanners often had between four and ten channels which required a separate crystal for each frequency received. Today, programmable scanners, such as, the Uniden 200-Channel NASCAR hand-held scanner, available from online merchants such as, Midwest Merchandise, at: www. http://www.midwest-merchandise.com/ and many retail electronics stores, allow hundreds or thousands of frequencies to be entered via a keypad and are stored in various memory banks which can scan at a rapid rate, given modern microprocessor technology.
These modern-day scanners use the FM, non-broadcast radio bands between 30 and 951 MHz. “CloseCall RF” technology available from Uniden means it's also able to detect nearby transmissions on any frequency and automatically tune into the discovered frequency. This means that operators can monitor air traffic without having prior knowledge of available area frequencies.
Popular among hobbyists, rail fans, off duty emergency services personnel, reporters, corporate spies, criminals and lawyers, scanners offer the amazing ability to monitor communications from police, emergency services, fire, amateur radio, public utilities, news media and more. Actually, every family should have a weather radio in the event of a severe weather emergency for the latest storm track warnings. A Uniden 200-Channel NASCAR scanner will provide the necessary early alert of thunderstorm, hurricane, tornado, flash flood or typhoon conditions.
Scanners also allow chosen frequencies to be stored in memory banks to allow them to be monitored later and will stop scanning only when there is a signal strong enough to break the radio's squelch setting.

In the United States, the following guidelines are essential. It is illegal to:
listen in on cellular and cordless phone calls,
intercept encrypted or scrambled communications,
sell or import radio scanners that are capable of receiving cellular phone frequencies (Note: does not apply to sales by individuals and radio scanners made before 1985),
modify radio scanners so that cellular phone frequencies can be received,
use information received for personal gain (A common example is where a taxi driver listens to a competitor's dispatch channel to steal a customer),
use information received to aid in the commission of a crime, or
disclose information received to other persons.
A partial copy of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 can be found here: "Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986"
The Uniden 200-Channel NASCAR hand-held scanner is fully PC programmable (software not included), at a range of 200 channels and 13 bands. There are 10 programmable search ranges and six pre-programmed service banks. For example, one memory bank can be assigned to air traffic control and another may be set for local police frequencies. They may be switched on and off depending on user preference.

The features included in the Uniden 200-Channel NASCAR hand-held scanner are: a backlit display, antenna, two AA batteries and belt clip. Its compact design of flexibility and portability can be purchased at http://www.midwest-merchandise.com/.

All about GPS Systems

GPS Systems

A portable GPS is an electronic satellite navigation system designed for use in cars, emergency service units, courier trucks and aircraft. Developed by the Department of Defense, the satellite system uses Global Positioning System to acquire positional data to locate the user on a specific road in the unit's map-filled database, by using satellites positioned in fixed orbits. Utilization of the database means the unit can give focused directional instructions of how to reach locations along other roads that are also stored in the database. Cobra NAV ONE Traffic Ready Portable Mobile Navigation System is one such device and is available from Midwest Merchandise at: http://www.midwest-merchandise.com.

Specifically, the GPS system measures the distance or range between satellites and the receiver, whether the receiver is mobile or stationary. The satellites provide data concerning their position in orbit by broadcasting data to the receiver. If the exact distance from the satellite in space is known, the radius of the position is equal to the distance of the satellite radius. The receiver processes the satellite range measurements and produces a read out of its position on the receiver monitor.

GPS navigation systems are used by U.S. military forces. Soldiers have performed maneuvers at night, given frequent desert sandstorms in geographical areas such as Iraq. During Operation Desert Storm GPS units were carried by soldiers on the ground and were attached to helicopters, vehicles and aircraft instrument panels.
GPS is helping to save lives, and it enabled rescuers to locate
and free trapped miners in Pennsylvania. Many emergency medical service units, police and fire departments use GPS receivers to determine which of their units is nearest to an emergency. GPS can also assist fire supervisors in quickly plotting the perimeter of a forest fire and can also produce updated data and maps before sending firemen into hot spots.
Vehicle tracking is currently a fast-growing use of the GPS application. Delivery trucks and couriers services use portable receivers, such as the Cobra NAV One Traffic Ready Portable Navigation System, to monitor their location at all times. This provides them with safety and efficiency.
GPS-equipped balloons monitor holes in the ozone layer and test air quality throughout the nation. Archaeologists, explorers and biologists use GPS to locate ancient ruins, migrating and endangered species.

Many rental car companies have installed GPS systems into vehicles so their customers receive the added value and security of not getting lost while on vacation or on a time-sensitive business trip. Not all car rental companies offer the GPS system, with the goal of keeping down cost. This makes purchasing a portable unit more appealing to the individual user, because it can be used anywhere, any day.

The Cobra NAV One Traffic Ready Portable Navigation System includes:

· 5" touch screen high-res ultra-bright color display
· iA.S.S.P technology for fast satellite acquisitions and uninterrupted signal reception
· Pre-loaded with North America street level detailed maps
· SD memory card expansion slot
· Automatic route navigation
· Includes 12V cigarette lighter plug, 120V AC adapter, windshield suction-cup mounting bracket and dash mount kit.
